Clear Blue Sky Productions Debuts Movies at Toronto Film Festival

Independent Film Production Company to Premiere Films by Michael Apted, John Sayles

Thursday, September 04, 1997

SEATTLE — Sept. 4, 1997 — Clear Blue Sky Productions, the independent film production company founded by investor Paul G. Allen, today announced that its first two film projects will premiere at the 1997 Toronto International Film Festival. The festival, one of the most widely respected film events in the world, runs Sept. 4 to13, 1997.

INSPIRATIONS, a 100-minute documentary from award-winning director Michael Apted (“28 Up,” “Moving the Mountain,” “Nell,” “Gorillas in the Mist”), explores the creative process of seven celebrated artists, including musician David Bowie, glass artist Dale Chihuly and painter Roy Lichtenstein. Intimate conversations reveal what motivates these artists to create, and discuss their hopes, fears and overall approach to their craft. Other artists featured in INSPIRATIONS are Japanese architect Tadao Ando, dancer Louise Lecavalier and choreographer Édouard Lock — both of the famed La La La Human Steps dance company of Montreal — and Native American sculptor Nora Naranjo-Morse. INSPIRATIONS, based on a concept by Allen, will be screened for the public twice in Toronto as part of the festival’s “Special Presentation” series. The film was executive-produced by Jody Patton, produced by Patton, Eileen Gregory and Michael Apted, and associate-produced by Eric Robison.

Clear Blue Sky’s second film, MEN WITH GUNS was directed and written by John Sayles — whose most recent movie, “Lone Star,” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay in 1997. MEN WITH GUNS had its world premiere last weekend at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, and will make its international debut in Toronto. MEN WITH GUNS features Argentine star Federico Luppi (“Cronos”) and American actors Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody. Shot in Spanish and Mayan dialects at more than 50 locations around Mexico, the film is a political road movie and journey of self-discovery set in a fictional but all too realistic Latin American country. MEN WITH GUNS, to be distributed in North America by Sony Pictures Classics and internationally by Ciby Sales, will be screened for the public twice in Toronto as part of the film festival’s “Gala” series. The film was executive-produced by Jody Patton, Lou Gonda and John Sloss, produced by R. Paul Miller and Maggie Renzi, and financed through the efforts of Lexington Road Productions and Clear Blue Sky Productions in association with IFC Productions.
