Clear Blue Sky Productions and Killer Films Join Forces on Multi-Year Development Deal

CANNES, FRANCE – May 15, 2000 – Clear Blue Sky Productions, the independent film production company founded by investor Paul G. Allen, and Killer Films, the film production company founded by filmmakers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler, today announced at the Cannes International Film Festival that the companies have entered into a comprehensive multi-year development and co-production deal. Clear Blue Sky Productions is well known for recent projects including Julie Taymor’s TITUS (Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Lange), John Sayles’ MEN WITH GUNS, Michael Apted’s ME & ISAAC NEWTON and INSPIRATIONS documentary films and a forthcoming eight-hour series on evolution currently in production with WGBH-TV and the NOVA Science Unit. Killer Films is the creative force behind such critically acclaimed indies as POISON, SWOON, KIDS, VELVET GOLDMINE, SAFE, HAPPINESS and the Golden Globe and Oscar Award winning BOYS DON’T CRY, directed by Kimberly Pierce. The deal with CBSP comes on the heels of a unique partnership between Killer Films and John Wells Productions. Terms of the partnership deal with Clear Blue Sky Productions, which was brokered by John Sloss of New York’s Sloss Law Office, were not disclosed. Killer Films is represented by Creative Artists Agency.

Under the direction of Patton and general manager Eric Robison, Clear Blue Sky Productions plans to develop and produce a number of motion picture projects with Vachon, Koffler and the Killer Films team. A number of projects are currently under consideration.

Killer Films is the New York-based production company founded by filmmakers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler. Killer’s first production was Cindy Sherman’s OFFICE KILLER starring Carol Kane, Molly Ringwald, and Jeanne Tripplehorn. Killer went on to produce KISS ME GUIDO, which was shown as part of The American Spectrum program at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival. Killer took on VELVET GOLDMINE next, starring Ewan McGregor, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Toni Collette and Christian Bale, followed by HAPPINESS, which was also released in 1998. The film had its world premiere in the Director’s Fortnight at the 1998 Cannes International Film Festival was awarded the prestigious Fipresci Critics Prize. In 1999, Pamela and Christine produced I’M LOSING YOU, Bruce Wagner’s adaptation of his best-selling novel starring Rosanna Arquette, Frank Langella and Andrew McCarthy. Also in 1999, the critically acclaimed and widely talked about BOYS DON’T CRY was released by Fox Searchlight, directed by Kimberly Pierce and based on the Brandon Teena story. Featured in the Venice, Toronto and New York International Film Festivals, the film’s actress Hilary Swank won both a Golden Globe and Oscar award for her performance in the leading role. Earlier that year Killer signed a partnership deal with John Wells Productions. Killer’s next project, to be released later this year by United Artists, is CRIME & PUNISHMENT IN SUBURBIA. Killer has also started production on a forthcoming as yet untitled Todd Solondz production.
Christine Vachon in 1994 was awarded the Frameline Award for Outstanding Achievement in Lesbian and Gay Media and in 1996 was honored with the prestigious Muse Award for Outstanding Vision and Achievement by New York Women in Film and Television. Most recently, she received the IFP’s 1999 Gotham Award for producing.
